Top 3 Tips To Bossing 2025

Samantha Cusick shares the strategies she uses to grow her businesses

"My costs are going up, I'm stressed"

Sound familiar?

Many salon owners are in the same boat but Slick has partnered with Samantha Cusick to bring you her top 3 tips to grow your business.

Samantha won Creative Head's Business Thinker in 2024. She is the Business Boss!

Tip 1: Increase Your Prices

"Do you even know what your cost of service is vs what you're charging?" says Samantha

Salons are often afraid to increase prices for fear that clients will leave. They won't! Most clients will thank you as they probably think you undercharge them!

If you're worried, ask yourself this: "When was the last time someone asked you how much a service costs?" Never! People value your service and are happy to pay!

  1. Itemise your costs per service in a table. Include the cost of your team's time per hour as well as your overheads per hour i,e electricity, rent etc
  2. Compare this to the price you actually charge on your price list
  3. If it's negative, you need to put prices up. Simple!

Tip 2: Know The Autumn Budget

"National Insurance and Minimum Wage changes are going to affect you. Spoiler alert, you're going to need to put up your prices" says Samantha

Doing nothing is not an option as your business will be worse off than it was before.

Calculate the impact of your National Insurance changes and the wage rises. How much more do you do need to take in order to stand still?

You will need to increase prices and increase productivity.

Either you need more bookings and same number of clients. Or you need higher spending clients and the same number of bookings.

Either way, Slick can help you increase bookings and increase average bill?

Tip 3: Look At How You're Running Your Business

"Which model works best for you? PAYE, chair rental or commission. You need to look at the options and decide" says Samantha. "What other costs can you cut from your salon to increase profitability?"

Questions to ask:

  • Are you covering your PAYE? Or if chair rental, are you charging your chair renters enough?
  • Have a look at your colour and retail suppliers, can you negotiate a better deal?
  • What's your marketing strategy to increase bookings?

Marketing strategy tips

  • Ask your clients that haven't returned why they didn't come back?
  • Send offers to those that haven't come back e.g free mask.
  • Don't discount your service though. This is a big no no!
  • Where are your clients? Are they on Insta or TikTok? Focus on where they are?
  • Send targeted SMS to get them to come back
